Diving into the ocean to see the Great Barrier Reef may be the best way to start a vacation. Airlie Beach is one of the closest access points to the Whitsunday Islands of Great Barrier Reef, which makes it a great place to participate in tours. There are tours for snorkelling, scuba diving, whale or dolphin watching, as well as pure adrenaline tours. Relax on one of many beaches or walk the waterfront boardwalk known as Bicentennial Walkway. Other outdoor trips include visiting Cedar Creek Falls, Hideaway Beach or Dingo Beach.

 

Road Trips from Here

From here head south for the sunshine coast and see Conway National Park on the way. Driving north, you have a couple of options. First, make sure you see Dryander National Park. From here you can head towards Cairns on the coast or inland for Alice Springs.

You will get to see some of the wonderful scenery and come away feeling like you have helped make our world just a little bit better.
  • Heart Reef – it’s exactly that, a heart-shaped reef that’s part of the Great Barrier Reef. The only way to see this reef is to fly over it. Swimming or snorkelling is not allowed because of its protected status.
  • Bicentennial Walkway – This 8 km walkway takes you past Lagoon beach and through the marina. Whether you are taking in the views of the tropical foliage, the ocean, the islands or the mountains there is always something to see on this beautiful walk.
  • Whitehaven Beach – This beach is only accessible by boat or by air so you can be sure there will not be crowds of people there when you visit. There are some great tour companies that will bring you to the island and arrange activities such as snorkelling and provide you lunch. This beach has some of the softest, whitest sand in the world, so bring sunglasses as the glare can be overwhelming.
  • Abell Point Marina – This beautiful harbour with breathtaking views of the aquamarine waters is home to many tour companies, restaurants and bars. Start a sailing tour from here or spend the day exploring.
  • Conway National Park – This beautiful coast park features rainforest-clad hills, secluded beaches and incredible views over the Whitsunday area. Spend the day hiking or biking the many trails in the area. Stop and see Mount Romper lookout giving you amazing views out over the islands. Make sure you stop on the ridge and see the views above the secluded Coral Beach.
